The Force
The Force is a metaphysical, spiritual, binding, omnipotent and ubiquitous power that holds enormous importance to both the Jedi and Sith Orders.
The Force is viewed in many different ways; the light side, the dark side, the Living Force, the Unifying Force, the Cosmic Force, and the Physical Force. The first two of those aspects, the light and dark side, are seen as the moral compass of the Force.
The Living Force is described as being present in most living beings, surrounding and penetrating them, thus making all living things connected by it. The view was widely adopted by the Jedi.
The Unifying Force was a unique view, where it treated the Force as a single entity, having neither a light or dark side. It was viewed as a deity that did not choose a side.
The Cosmic and Physical Force were less views then they were definitions for certain abilities. The Cosmic Force references to the ability to live on as a Force Ghost upon dying. The Physical Force is the actual application a Jedi or Sith would use, such as a Force Push.

The Light Side
The light side of the Force, was the side aligned with honesty, compassion, mercy, self-sacrifice, and other positive emotions. Through these positive emotions, it focused more on the ideas of good, generosity, healing and wisdom.
Practitioners of the light side would often meditate to purge their negative emotions, like anger or hate. This was imperative to a Jedi. Due to the relationship the Jedi had with the Force, they often saw themselves more as tools of the Force during situations.

The dark side
The dark side of the Force, was the side aligned with anger, hatred, greed, jealousy, fear, aggression, megalomania and unrestrained passion. It focused on more negative emotions.
The fall to the dark side usually began with temptation, committing tempting actions that might lead to the dark-side. Rushing to help friends, facing obvious perils, haste in general, had the potential to lead to temptation.
Then came imperilment, usually involving an indecisive Jedi, which can be quite catastrophic. Especially Jedi who believed they could dabble in the dark side and quickly redeem themselves to the light.
Submission was the third stage, during which the Jedi accepts their dark path. Situations like attempting to destroy the Sith through infiltration, or trying to save loved ones from death have caused famous Jedi to fall.
Lastly, redemption or atonement. A Jedi who is only slightly tainted can atone for their actions through meditation, reflection and absolution. Redemption often occurred through a redeemed Jedi performing a selfless act of heroism, without using the dark side to obtain results. Though this happens rarely, it is still possible.
